On 2/18/16 I took my grandson to school at Fairley Elementary; to my dismay I notice, along w/other parents, our children standing outside in the cold while teachers and staff were inside of the school warm and cozy. This was right at 8am; as I sat in the car awaiting on someone to open the door for the children, I notice there were at least 7 children who didn't have a coat on. Around 8:10 the doors were finally open. When I asked the first adult I saw, why are the children being made to stand outside in the cold while the adults are inside where is warm, I was told the school doesn't open the door until 8:15. I then asked her why are there no adults out here with the children and just like I see some of these kids w/out coats, I'm sure you, as well as staff, see them, why not have those kids to come in because it was so cold this morning? I got nothing from the teacher.
On my way home, I called the school asking for the Principal. I didn't get a return phone call from the principal until I called the 3rd time around 2:10 pm. After the conversation w/the Principal I was immediately turned off with the school as well as staff. This woman compared our babies to Banks, when she said, "Just like Banks, the doors don't open until 8:30 regardless of who is standing outside". She tried to justify the fact that our kids where left in the cold because their place of business doesn't open there doors until 8:15 am. "Ma'am where is the compassion for the children." Is that not a requirement for teachers and school staff?" Sadly our Public School system is filled w/ones like the staff including the Principal at Fairley. To see those kids outside this morning in the cold really disturbed me and something definitely has to be done.
The bottom line is whenever there is inclement weather, the children should be allowed to come inside. Children are prone to become sick because of cold the weather; and just from a parent’s perspective, how would you like to see your child standing outside in the cold when they don’t have to be.
